Unproven assumptions in medicine don’t just fail children; they destroy whole families.
Ongoing Family Spotlight
Every month, The Honest Diagnosis Project will spotlight at least one family that desperately needs our help. Helping doesn’t always have to mean a monetary donation.
Many of the families we advocate for also need expert opinions, quality lawyers, and support during the worst time in their lives.
Sharing these stories with your circles also helps spread awareness.
A’Tese, Isaiha & Aries
On the morning of September 20th, my son Aries Dolè Mason was born after a very difficult labor that left me with heart failure. Aries wasn’t breathing or crying, and the OB had to shake him on my chest. She shook him so hard, I thought our baby was gone. He made a recovery, and we were able to take him home the next day.
I noticed small things about my son that raised a little concern, for instance, how he never really smiled. I have more children, and this was abnormal in my experience. It was rare, maybe once or twice, to see him smile. He also always seemed spaced out, nodding his head, and sometimes I would notice a shake or spasm.
We expressed our concerns to his primary care provider doctor but were assured that everything was fine and “normal. I also spoke to a relative who was a nurse about these concerns.
After my son came down with a common cold, we received a call from his primary doctor letting us know his newborn screening had just come back abnormal, and they wanted to repeat it. Later, it was found to be abnormal for Lysosomal storage disease, for which he was tested multiple times.
Suddenly, one afternoon, Aries' father had to call 911 for our son. After nap time, he went to get him, and Aries was not responding. He immediately started to give our son CPR when I walked into the house. In that moment, we both knew something was wrong, and I said, "We need to call 911."
In that moment, we believed we had done everything in our power to help our son. It was such a scary, hopeless moment. I never thought that doing the right thing for my son could have ended so badly and left us where we are today.
My fiancé has been accused of "child abuse" and "shaking my son." Our life has been turned upside down. He was followed from work by law enforcement, was arrested, held at the wrong jail, just to be moved, and still had to wait almost another week and a half to see a judge to be granted bond! Due to the unfair and unfortunate circumstances, he lost his job.
Later, state agents contacted Stafford court to report probation violation for the false charges of "child abuse," and he was once again thrown in jail. This caused him to miss important court dates where we needed to be able to advocate for our son together.
He has not been able to see his son since November 2023. As a man, as a provider, as a father, and as a fiancé... this is killing him, this is killing our family. We don’t deserve this.
My fiance has always been a loving father, a good example to our family, a great son to his mother, a great father to his son, who's been stripped away from us.
This is causing unbelievable strain on my family. Financially, mentally, and emotionally. I have health issues myself, worrying and stressing like this could be detrimental to my health!! We have huge concerns on both sides of our bloodline and need to get our son the actual medical help he needs and deserves to understand what really caused his episode.
We’ve asked multiple times for genetic testing on our son, only to be denied time and time again. Although the extensive family history. it’s seems like they are doing everything in their power to fight against us rather than stand with us and help this child. We’re doing everything we can to protect our family.
You can listen to their story here and find the family’s GoFundMe here. Every single dollar helps move this family one step closer to reuniting with their son.
